How to Air-Dry Your Hair on Mornings When You Need to Hit Snooze
Knowing how to air-dry wet hair is key to ensuring an effortless routine. For many (especially for those with wavy or curly hair), air-drying is the only way to guarantee you will avoid the dreaded frizz. For others whocouldblow-dry their hair but choose not to, air-drying is less faff than wrestling with a round brush and a hair dryer. It also means you can hit the snooze button a couple more times, which on some mornings is very welcome.
Unless you have fine or short hair, air-drying can take a while to dry—not great if you need to look put together by the time you set foot in the office. The answer? You need to speed up the process so your hair is almost drybeforeleaving the house. Below we've revealed six smart tricks that will speed up your air-drying time—dare we say even cut it in half.

Here's something you probably didn't know: Conditioner not only smoothes your strands—it can also help them dry faster. The silicone in most conditioners coats and seals each strand while repelling water. Now for a beauty editor tip: Keep a wide-tooth comb inside of your shower and always comb through the hair when applying conditioner to ensure an even application. Trust us—you'll see the difference.
News flash: Your towel (and the techniques you adopt) aren't doing your hair any favours—especially in the drying department. That excessive back-and-forth rubbing is only roughing up your hair cuticles, so opt for squeezing it with a soft microfibre towel instead. The soft texture of a microfibre towel soaks up twice as much water without frizzing up your strands. Wrap your hair up in a turban style while applying your makeup or simply squeeze gently and allow it to air-dry. Don’t have a snazzy microfibre towel on hand? "Use a pillowcase instead! The fibres are much finer than those found in a normal bath towel, and cause less frizz," suggests Rob Fitch, a principal stylist at Josh Wood Atelier.
If you have curly hair, we've got a time-saving trick for you ahead…
Calling all curly-haired readers: If you don't already, you need to start plopping your hair. Incorporating this oddly named technique will help your curls dry faster and ensure they retain their natural shape (no frizz to see here).
Here's how plop your hair: First, saturate your wet strands with a leave-in conditioner or styling cream. Then, take a cotton T-shirt and lay it on a flat surface with the neck and sleeves closest to you (your bed is a safe bet). Next, stand over the T-shirt and flip your hair over so your hair is "plopping" onto the fabric. Lastly, grab the bottom of the shirt, hold it at the nape of your neck, roll the rest of the T-shirt toward your face, and tie the sleeves in a knot. Leave this on for 10 to 20 minutes as you finish the rest of your morning routine; then just shake out your curls. Here's a visual guide.
Once your hair is air-drying, start applying your makeup or sit down for breakfast. Have a radiator sitting close by? The extra heat will help speed up the process. If your hair is frizz-prone, you'll want to keep it wrapped up right until you're ready to leave the house.
Thanks to its multitasking abilities, we are completely obsessed with the Goody Quick Style Paddle Brush (£30). In between the bristles are microfibres just like the ones in the microfibre fast-drying towels. This innovative brush detangles and mops up any residual water as you brush it through your hair. Genius!
Since conditioner repels water, maximise that result by working a little Bumble and Bumble (£24) through your hair. It contains polymers and plant-based conditioners to repel water which helps speed up the air-drying process—plus, these ingredients also fight frizz with a dry, touchable finish. It comes in two formulas one for fine hair and another for thick.
