How to Control Speakers in Multiple Rooms

Five Methods:

This wikiHow teaches you how to control speakers in multiple rooms. You can set up a multi-room system in your home using Bluetooth speakers, which allow you to connect to them with your smartphone and stream audio to them. Smart Speakers such as Google Home, Apple HomePod, or Amazon Echo allow you to set up speakers in multiple rooms and play audio using voice commands, or a smartphone app.

Steps

Using Bluetooth Speakers on Android

  1. Place Bluetooth speakers in each room.Place the Bluetooth speakers in the room you want them. Place them in a central location and plug them in. You will need to be near a Bluetooth speaker in order to connect to it.
  2. Put the Bluetooth speaker in pairing mode.Different Bluetooth speakers have a different method for putting the device in pairing mode. Consult the instruction manual, or the internet to learn how to put your speakers in pairing mode.
  3. Swipe down from the top of your phone using two fingers.After you unlock your phone, swipe down from the top using two fingers to display the Quick Access menu.
  4. Tap and hold the Bluetooth icon.It's the icon that kind of resembles a jagged "B" with a bracket on the back. This displays the bluetooth menu. Your phone automatically starts scanning for nearby Bluetooth devices.
  5. Tap the speaker you want to pair with.With the speaker in pairing mode, your phone should be able to discover the Bluetooth speaker. Tap the speaker when you see it appear in the list of available devices. This pairs the device with your phone.
    • If you do not see the speaker appear in the list of available devices, put the speaker in pairing mode again, and then tapScanin the upper-right corner of Bluetooth menu on your smartphone.
  6. Play audio on your phone.Once your phone is paired with the Bluetooth speaker, media and call audio will play through the bluetooth speaker. You can play audio using any app, such as Spotify, YouTube, iTunes, and more. You can disconnect your phone from the speaker by turning the speaker off. You can also open the Bluetooth menu in Quick Access and tap the gear icon next to the bluetooth speaker. TapUnpair, or tap the switch next to "Call audio" or "Media audio" to turn them off. Anytime you want to connect to a different Bluetooth speaker, turn the speaker on, go to the Bluetooth menu on your smartphone and tap the Bluetooth speaker.

Using Bluetooth Speakers on iPhone and iPad

  1. Place Bluetooth speakers in each room.Place the Bluetooth speakers in the room you want them. Place them in a central location and plug them in. You will need to be near a Bluetooth speaker in order to connect to it.
  2. Put the Bluetooth speaker in pairing mode.Different Bluetooth speakers have a different method for putting the device in pairing mode. Consult the instruction manual, or the internet to learn how to put your speakers in pairing mode.
  3. Tap the Settings app.It's the app that has an icon with two gears. This opens the Settings menu.
  4. TapBluetooth.It's near the top of the Settings menu. It's next to a blue icon with a symbol that resembles a jagged "B" with a bracket behind it.
  5. Tap the switch to turn Bluetooth on.If Bluetooth is not turned on, tap the toggle switch at the top of the Bluetooth menu to make sure Bluetooth is on. The switch should be green. Your iPhone or iPad will automatically start scanning for nearby Bluetooth devices.
  6. Tap the the speaker you want to connect to.With the speaker in pairing mode, you iPhone or iPad should be able to detect the Bluetooth speaker. Tap it as soon as it appears in the list of Other devices. This connects your iPhone or iPad to the Bluetooth speaker and all audio from your device will play through your Bluetooth speaker.
    • If the Bluetooth speaker does not appear in the list of Other Devices, make sure the Bluetooth speaker is still in pairing mode.
  7. Play audio on your iPhone or iPad.Once your audio device is connected to a Bluetooth speaker, all audio on your iPhone or iPad will play through the speaker. Anytime you want to connect to a different Bluetooth speaker in your home, turn the speaker on, open the Bluetooth menu in Settings on your iPhone or iPad, and tap the speaker you want to connect to.
    • To disconnect from the speaker, return to the Bluetooth menu in Settings on your iPhone or iPad. Tap the "i" icon across from the Bluetooth speaker, then tapDisconnect.

Using Google Home

  1. Set up your speakers.Place a speaker in each room and plug it in to an electrical outlet. You will need to download the Google Home smartphone app for or . Read "How to Set Up Google Home" to learn more about how to set up your speakers. You will need to go through this process with each speaker.
  2. Open the Google Home app.It's the app that has a colorful line image that resembles a house.
  3. Tap .It's the button with three vertical lines. It's in the upper-left corner of the Google Home app. This displays the sidebar menu to the left.
  4. TapSettingsorAccount Preferences.If you are using iPhone or iPad, tapSettings. If you are using Android, tapAccount Preferences.
  5. TapMedia accountsorMusic.If you are using iPhone or iPad, tapMusic. If you are using Android, tapMedia accounts.
  6. Link your account to your media streaming services.If you don't see you default music service available at the top of the list of streaming services, tap the chainlink or "+" icon next to the service you want to add. Then tapLink Accountin the pop-up. Sign in with the username and password associated with that streaming service. Read "How to Play Music With Google Home" to learn more about how to link your music services with Google Home.
  7. Tap the music service you want to use.After you linked all the music services you have an account with, you can tap the music service you want to use in the list of Media Accounts, or Music services. This sets that media streaming service as your default music player.
  8. Play music on your speakers using voice commands.To use voice commands on your Google Home speakers, say "Ok Google" followed by a command. For example, you could say "Ok Google, play Nirvana", or "Ok Google, play Spotify". You can also say "Ok Google, skip track", or adjust the volume by saying "Ok Google, volume 4".
  9. Open a streaming app.Another way to play music on a speaker is to cast media to it from within the app. Many popular streaming apps, such as Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, iHeart Radio, Netflix, and more support casting.
  10. Tap .It's the icon that resembles a TV screen with a Wi-Fi symbol in the corner. This icon is usually found in the upper-right corner of the app. This displays a list of all available device on your Wi-Fi network.
  11. Tap the speaker you want to cast to.It's in the list of available devices on your wi-fi network. This casts media to that speaker. You can control the playback using the app you are casting from.

Using Amazon Echo

  1. Set up your speakers.Set up each speaker in the rooms you want them in and plug them in. You will need to download the Amazon Alexa app to set up the speakers. The app is available from the , or the . Use the following steps to set up an Amazon Echo speaker. You will need to repeat these steps for each speaker in your house.
    • Plug in the Amazon Echo.
    • Download and Install the Amazon Alexa app on your smart phone.
    • Open the Amazon Alexa app and Sign in to your Amazon account.
    • Tap the Settings icon in the lower-right corner.
    • Tap the "+" icon in the upper-right corner.
    • TapAdd Device.
    • TapAmazon Echo
    • Tap the speaker model you are setting up.
    • Press and hold the action button on the Echo device until the ring on top turns orange.
    • Tap the Echo speaker in the smartphone app.
    • TapContinue.
    • Tap your Wi-Fi network.
    • Type your Wi-Fi password.
  2. Open the Amazon Alexa app.After you use the Alexa app to set up your speakers, you can use the Alexa app to link music and media streaming services to the Amazon Echo speakers.
  3. Tap .It's the button with three lines in the upper-right corner of the Alexa app. This opens the sidebar menu
  4. TapMusic & Books.It's the first option in the sidebar menu to the left.
  5. TapLink Your Favorite Streaming Services.It's the large white image that has a picture of a band.
  6. Tap the music service you want to link.Amazon Alexa allows you to pair with a variety of services, including iHeart Radio, Pandora, and Spotify.
    • You can also play music and videos from Amazon Prime, or audio books from Audible through the Alexa app.
  7. Sign in with your username and password.After you select a streaming service you want to link, sign in with the username and password associated with that service.
  8. Use voice commands to play audio on Amazon Echo speakers.Once you have linked all your streaming services, you can play audio on the Amazon Echo by using voice commands. To use voice commands, say "Alexa" followed by a command. For example, "Alexa, play Nirvana", or "Alexa, play 80's music on Pandora".
  9. Open the Alexa app.In addition to voice commands, you can use the Alexa app to control the Echo speakers.
  10. Tap the play icon.It's the button that resembles a circle with a 'Play' triangle at the bottom of the screen. This displays the "Music & Books" menu.
  11. Tap a streaming service, podcast, or audio book.The "Music & Books" menu allows you to cast audio to your speakers. If you tap a music streaming service, tap a song or playlist.
  12. Select which Amazon Echo you want to cast to.The Echo device that the audio is currently streaming to is displayed at the top. To select a different Echo device, tap the Echo's name at the top to display a drop-down menu. Tap the device you want to cast to.

Using Apple HomePod

  1. Setup HomePod speakers.Place the HomePod speakers in the rooms you want them in and plug them in. Use the following steps to setup your HomePod speakers. You will need to repeat these steps for each HomePod speaker you have in your home. You can edit the settings for the speakers at any time using the Home app. It's the app that has an icon with an orange house.
    • Plug in the HomePod speaker.
    • Unlock your iPhone and place it next to the speaker.
    • TapSet upon your phone.
    • Select a room and tapContinue.
    • TapEnable Personal Requests
    • TapAgree
    • TapTransfer Settings.
  2. Use voice commands to control the HomePod.The HomePod speaker has Siri built-in. You can use voice commands by saying "Hey Siri". If you have a subscription to Apple Music, you can play any song using voice commands. For example, you could say "Hey Siri, play jazz in living room." Apple Air 2 has the ability to control multiple speakers at once. For example, you could say "Hey Siri, play my music everywhere" to play music in all rooms.
  3. Open a music streaming app.Besides Apple Music, you can stream music from other apps, such as Spotify, or iHeart Radio to your HomePod speakers.
  4. Play a song through a streaming app.Use the music streaming app to play any song on your iPhone or iPad.
  5. Swipe down from the top of the screen.With the audio playing, swipe down from the top of the screen on your iPhone or iPad. This displays the notifications screen with the playback widget at the top.
  6. Tap the AirPlay icon in the widget.It's the icon that resembles a triangle with circles surrounding the top tip. It's in the upper-right corner of the widget. This displays all available devices you can cast to.
  7. Tap the speaker you want to cast to.This plays the music in the speaker you selected. You can control the playback, and volume using the widget in the notifications screen on your iPhone or iPad.
    • Tap multiple speakers to play audio on multiple HomePod speakers.
