Sanna Nielsen - Undo (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
I remember watching M*A*S*H a lot when I was a kid. In one particular episode, Major Winchester pulls an all-night bender in Tokyo where it appears he got married and has no recollection of the event. It all turns out to be a happy misunderstanding, and they hold an amusing "Divorce Ceremony" officiated by Hawkeye, in which the bride and groom dis-affirm their vows by saying "IUndo."
It turns out that ceremony is not as far-fetched as you think. In Japan, you can now invite your friends to your divorce ceremony. Bride and Groom arrive in separate transportation, an officiate gives a small speech about how they've grown apart, and then they take turns smashing their wedding rings with giant green hammers. Afterward, they sit back-to-back at a restaurant, politely ignoring each other until it's time to bow and say goodbye for good.
I'm trying to imagine myself proposing such a fiasco to Peter, and I just can't picture it. Depending on the day, we'd be just as likely to take the hammer to each other's heads than to a ring. I really don't think anyone needs a speech to inform them that we've grown apart, and sharing an uncomfortable meal with friends who have to literally choose who they're sitting (and siding) with sounds like all kinds of laughs, doesn't it?
Still, I understand the yearning for closure, and the need for finality, maybe even ceremony, as you leave a chunk of your past (yourself?) behind and move forward into a new and separate life. I'm reminded of a wonderful chapter in the book "Split" by Suzanne Finnamore, when she barbeques her keepsake wedding invitations and various wedding-related souvenirs on her gas grill late one evening, drinking wine and laughing madly. That kind of resolution is good for the soul, I think.
I'm not sure what I'll do when the divorce decree arrives in the mail. Cry? Dance? A little of both? I think about it right now, and all I feel is a weight like a rock in my stomach. Maybe I'll feel like a weight is finally off my shoulders.
Or maybe, I'll realize that the sun rose that morning, and will set that evening, and I'll still be here. That's ceremony enough for me, I think.
