Felix Baumgartner: I didn't enjoy jump from space
MH interview: Felix Baumgartner
, he had just finished travelling very fast. . Two and a half years on from his history-making skydive from the edge of space and, once again,MHsqueezed our questions in around a world-famous event in which Baumgartner would be accelerating at a terrifying velocity – albeit this time from within the relatively spacious confines of a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, as opposed to a claustrophobic space suit.
The Tour Auto Optic 2ooo is the oldest automotive challenge still in existence today, and Baumgartner was in Paris to take part in the five-day race on behalf of Zenith, official timekeepers of the event and the people in charge of ensuring the Austrian's wristwear can keep up with his daredevil antics. Just before he zipped out of the Grand Palais to wend his way down to Biarritz we grabbed him to chat heroes, fears and vices.
Are you ever tempted to come out of retirement and try another extreme challenge?
It could happen anytime if there is something out there that is really attracting my mind and challenging enough to go for it.
What advice would you give your 16 year old self today?
Always look forward. The only reason to look back is to see how far you have made it.
How healthy is your diet?
I am not super crazy about my diet but I look for good quality food. My mum’s kitchen is still my favourite!
Who is your hero and why?
Neil Armstrong, because he was the first human who set foot on another planet than earth.
How many hours sleep do you get per night?
Eight to nine hours. I never get out of bed before 9 am. That privilege is the biggest accomplishment in my life.
Where do you see yourself in 20 years’ time?
Still traveling around the globe to inspire people.
When was the last time you cried?
Every time when I am doing a speech and they show the Red Bull Stratos footage right before I go on stage. That part where my mother starts to cry when my capsule takes off is still killing me!
What are you scared of?
You’ve been offered a pill that will make you live forever. Do you take it?
Within a second. Life is so interesting and colourful. It makes me sad to know that we all have to leave one day. At least I left a footprint on this planet and therefore I will hopefully live forever in people's minds.
