New MS Symptom: At Least It Waited...

Thanks to months of planning, weeks of methodic preparation and – I’ll not lie – a couple of Provigil tablets, our 11-hour, 12-course Thanksgiving feast came off as well as I could have hoped (and likely better than it should have!)
Family drama aside, it was the best dinner party I’ve ever thrown!
The foods were all inspired by the flavors of the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca – deep, earthy and complex flavors which lent themselves to small portions and long, luxurious contemplations. I tasted every bite like it was my last.
And then came Sunday… Actually, if I had thought about it, it was probably Saturday evening that things began to go haywire.
We had a small plate of leftover turkey and roasted pumpkin bread pudding for our dinner and it didn’t taste quite right. The turkey had been slathered with mole negro sauce, wrapped in banana leaves and cooked over smoldering grape vines. I thought that maybe this method, while making for an amazing dinner, didn’t afford to be the best for the next day.
Then Sunday breakfast.
Again using a few ingredients left from Thursday’s dinner preparations, I made omelets of duck eggs with dinosaur kale and Dungeness crab and topped them with a bit of aioli and salsa bravas.
Now, I knew something was happening!
I now have a line about two-thirds of the way back on my tongue which registers nothing but bitter, acrid nastiness! I’velostmy ability to taste sweet and salt on two different occasions. This time, thanks to multiple sclerosis, I’m getting a false register from the taste buds in that one, narrow band of my palate.
What’s odd is that it’s not just something I taste and then can just swallow away. This tart bitterness lasts for nearly a half hour after I’ve finished the unsatisfying mouthful.
So, as most of us do, I’m going to focus on the positive. At least I had a chance to taste everything on my favorite holiday of the year. At least I had the culinary senses working whilst I prepared a meal for others. At least it waited…
And maybe, just maybe, it could even help with the concerted effort to lose some weight that begins today!
Wishing you and your family the best of health.
