Stop Everything: This New Avocado Is Always Ripe
Frozen avocado is a thing. For a long time, we have leaned on bags of frozen veg to reach our five-a-day when we've been tight on time or money. But frozen avocado isn't just convenient, it's life changing (and I'm only half joking).
Iceland announced this week that it has started selling bags of destoned, presliced frozen avocado, while Tesco has been shifting bags of our favourite green fruit since late 2015. (Who knew? Because I would havelovedto know.) Now, you may think frozen avocado sounds a bit gross, but hear us out. It's always ripe; you simply defrost these perfect slices of Kermit-green avocado whenever you fancy. No waiting for your avocados to ripen on a sun-drenched windowsill (oh, who are we kidding?), on a dreary windowsill, only for you to miss that small window of time when it was perfectly ripe.
Not only is the question of ripeness not an issue with this frozen offering, but apparently traditional avocados should come with a safety warning, according to a London-based plastic surgeon. Simon Eccles, an honorary secretary of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, toldThe Times he has been treating up to four patients each week with avocado-related knife injuries.
It's becoming so prevalent in ERs that it's been dubbed "avocado hand." He said, "People do not anticipate that the avocados they buy can be very ripe and there is minimal understanding of how to handle them. We don't want to put people off the fruit, but I think warning labels are an effective way of dealing with this." Well, a cold hand from reaching into the freezer draw is preferable to a sliced one.
So onto the taste and how you use it. We're not going to lie, it tastes soggy eaten alone, but if you smash it onto toast, you won't notice the difference. Obviously, you need to defrost the slices for a couple of hours (preferable to waiting days for them to ripen). They then stay green for a few hours, so you have time to pop them onto your toast and sprinkle them with chilli and lemon. Or mash them up into guac, whatever takes your fancy. Still frozen, you can pop them into a blender for a chilled smoothie or blitz them up to make a healthy chocolate mousse.
